Simply getting a linkback from a site does not necessarily mean that it will do anything to improve your search engine rankings or bring more targeted traffic to your site. Understanding link popularity (which has to do with both the quality and size of the linked website) can dramatically improve your linkbuilding efforts by allowing you to focus on getting a small number of highly popular links rather than a high number of irrelevant and useless links.

Creating remarkable content will get high quality inbound links if properly promoted. Unfortunately creating great content is a lot harder then spamming for links, which is why remarkable content is few and far between.
And also gives you an incentive to build your own link popularity.
I'd say it's certainly worth doing a lot of work to get one good link than spending a lot of time building useless links.
