India Court Equates Lying About Marriage to Rape

5
points

A man in India who lied to a woman about his marital status has been charged with rape, according to a recent Supreme Court ruling. In this specific case, a man convinced a woman to marry him and bear his child although he was already married to another woman, although the implications of the case would apply to married men who simply have sex with another woman who was led to believe them single.

Seems wrong, maybe fraud even, but rape?
That's a bit harsh.

By that rule, it would seem like any lies told in order to court women could constitute rape.
