Measuring the Cost and Benefits of Linkbait
Sat, 06/07/2008 - 09:26 — beachboy97a7The term 'linkbait' refers to any posted information that is intended to drive traffic back to the host source purporting to present the information. This tactic can be very effective in driving large volumes of traffic to websites especially when the topics projected are outlandish and eye-catching. The trouble is, that writers are therefore encouraged to even make up 'newsworthy' information in order to generate powerful linkbait for clients, though the credibility and accuracy of the information may actually be more detrimental to the client's reputation than the traffic itself is worth.

This is really a coming of age story of internet media. Magazines and other print media have been using these types of tricks for years to try and get people to buy their printed product.
It seems to be more cost effective than Google ads.
It's all about delivery and appropriateness: but of course should also be credible.
Linkbait is starting to make up a good percentage of content on the Internet- no point in generating content if you're not getting at least a linkback in exchange.
