Online piracy had gotten the French government so edgy that they resort to exercising some tough love to its citizens. If individuals are caught downloading and patronizing pirated material, they will have their time in court to be reprimanded, or, worse, sentenced for jail time. With the support of the entertainment industry and even President Nicolas Sarkozy himself, the law will take effect at the start of 2010.
With this law, they hope to eradicate illegal use of the Internet by two-thirds. Yeah, good luck with that. Maybe they should also be aware that hardcore pirates and their patrons will and always will be a few steps ahead of the authorities. They think controlling piracy through this means will actually work. I think they'll just burn more euros to make it appear like they're doing something about it.
